Where email plainly wins: everyone already has it. There is nothing to adopt, no invite to accept, and it works with literally anyone on earth — including people who will never make an account anywhere else. docivault cannot match that; the other side has to accept an invite before they see a single file. Should I stop using email for documents entirely?
Not for everything. For a one-off exchange with someone who will never sign up for anything, email is still the pragmatic choice. Switch when the same person sends or receives documents from you repeatedly — that is where the lack of access control and record-keeping starts to actually cost you.
Does the other person have to make an account to use docivault?
Yes, a lightweight one — they accept an invite and sign in to see their scoped space. That is real friction email does not have, and it is the trade-off for access control that survives past the moment you hit send.
Is an email attachment actually insecure, or is that overstated?
It depends what "insecure" means. Most email is encrypted in transit between major providers, so interception in flight is unlikely. The real gap is afterwards: once it is in the recipient’s inbox, you have no way to revoke it, know who else has seen it, or stop it being forwarded.
What does docivault add that a normal attachment does not?
A scoped space per contact instead of a thread, a category label instead of a subject line, a share link you can expire or revoke, and comments attached to the document rather than in a reply chain. All of that is built today. What is not is a complete record of every view and download by every reader.
